Nagoya travel guide: city sights, where to stay and Ghibli Park

Plan one or two Nagoya city days, choose Nagoya Station or Sakae, and keep Ghibli Park separate. Includes the current castle fee and tower closure.

Is Nagoya worth a stop?

Nagoya suits a stop built around industrial museums, Nagoya Castle’s palace and grounds, local food and shopping districts. Choose one full city day for a compact visit or two for a museum-led stay. Give Ghibli Park its own day in Nagakute, outside central Nagoya. These are suggested allocations, not admission bundles. If you only have a short Tokyo–Kyoto trip and none of those interests is a priority, you can continue through Nagoya without adding a hotel change. If Ghibli Park is the reason for stopping, secure its dated ticket before committing the surrounding accommodation.

One day: castle, Osu and a Sakae evening

Start at Nagoya Castle in the morning, using Nagoyajo Station on the Meijo subway line. Visit Hommaru Palace and the grounds; the main tower keep is closed, so this is not a climb to a castle observation floor. Allow the morning for the visit rather than arriving near the final palace admission. After lunch, use the subway for Osu. Enter the shopping district from Osu Kannon or Kamimaezu, then walk the arcades according to your interests in secondhand clothes, electronics and food. Shops keep individual hours, so an early-morning arcade visit is not equivalent to an afternoon one. Finish with dinner around Sakae or return to the station if your onward train is that evening. This sequence is our suggested city day, not a timed tour.

Nagoya Castle: current fee, hours and closed keep

The official adult individual admission is ¥1,000 after the change on 1 October 2026; children in junior high school and younger enter free. Older ¥500 adult listings no longer describe the current standard fee. Regular hours are 9am–4:30pm, with castle admission ending at 4pm. Hommaru Palace also ends admission at 4pm, and the castle advises allowing about ten minutes to walk there from either gate. The regular year-end closure is 29 December–1 January. The main tower keep remains closed because of age and earthquake-resistance concerns. The reconstructed Hommaru Palace and castle grounds are the reason to plan a visit now; do not buy transport or organise the day around entering the keep.

A second city day: choose the Toyota museum deliberately

The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology explains textile machinery and automobile manufacturing in preserved industrial buildings. It is the Nagoya museum near Sako Station, not a factory-tour booking or a generic visit to Toyota City. The museum lists a three-minute walk from Meitetsu Sako Station. Give it a morning or afternoon, then keep the rest of the day for a slower meal or another district rather than adding Ghibli Park as well. Regular museum hours are 9:30am–5pm, last admission 4:30pm. It closes on Mondays, or Tuesday when Monday is a holiday, plus year-end/New Year closures. Put this day before or after Monday as needed.

Ghibli Park: a separate Nagakute day

Ghibli Park is inside Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park in Nagakute. It is not the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, and tickets are not interchangeable. Advance reservations are required; the park does not sell ordinary admission tickets at the area entrances. The current overseas page lists O-Sanpo Day Pass Standard for the Grand Warehouse, Mononoke Village and Valley of Witches. Premium includes all five areas and the specified building interiors. Standard does not give the same access to Howl’s Castle and the other designated Valley of Witches interiors; limited same-day building tickets are separate and can sell out. Choose by the places you want to enter, not simply by the word day pass. The published general release rule for these passes is the 10th, two months before the visit month, at 2pm Japan time; announced dates can change. The Grand Warehouse has an assigned entry time. Premium holders must collect their wristband by noon, even when the Warehouse entry is later. Bring your passport: the named applicant must attend, and the park may check identification.

How to reach Ghibli Park from Nagoya

Take the Higashiyama subway line to Fujigaoka, then change to Linimo for Ai-Chikyuhaku Kinen Koen. The park’s official directions identify Exit 2 as the park access. Leave time after arriving at the station to reach the specific area on your ticket; the park covers a large site. This is subway plus Linimo travel, not an included JR journey. Plan the transport and the park-area entry separately. A late train arrival at Nagoya followed by a reserved early park entry is a poor combination; sleeping in Nagoya beforehand is the simpler choice.

What to eat and where to put the meal

Nagoya’s local choices include miso katsu, pork cutlet with miso sauce; tebasaki, fried chicken wings; and hitsumabushi, grilled eel over rice. Choose the dish and the district before crossing town for dinner. Sakae and Nishiki offer multiple local-food restaurants; station-side dining is easier before an onward train. The city tourism guide lists Kitchen Nagoya in the Taiko-dori and Chuo-dori station food streets, and Daruma near Sakae Station, as places serving several Nagoya dishes. These are practical location examples, not claims of personal visits or guaranteed tables. Leave a meal break rather than treating food only as something to squeeze between attractions.

Getting around and continuing through central Japan

Use the subway between sightseeing districts rather than treating the castle, station, Osu and Sakae as one compact walk. JR, Meitetsu and the city subway are different networks. A JR rail pass is not a city-wide subway ticket, and buying a city day ticket does not cover every private train or bus. For a longer trip, Nagoya can lead into Takayama on the Hida rail corridor. Kanazawa and the Hokuriku route use a different side of central Japan, while Matsumoto is a separate eastern gateway. Choose the next overnight before selecting a pass or returning to Tokyo/Kyoto.
