Yokohama travel guide: a waterfront day trip or an overnight stay?
Plan Minato Mirai, the Red Brick Warehouse waterfront and Chinatown, choose the right arrival station and decide whether Yokohama needs a separate hotel.
Is Yokohama worth a day trip from Tokyo?
Choose Yokohama for a harbour walk, Minato Mirai and a meal in Chinatown. For a first visit, a day or afternoon-to-evening trip from Tokyo is enough; stay overnight if the waterfront evening is a main part of the trip or you want a second day without returning to Tokyo. Moving hotels merely to fit in this walking route adds work without much benefit. Start at Sakuragicho or Minatomirai, walk through the Shinko waterfront and Red Brick Warehouse area, then continue towards Yamashita Park and Chinatown. Finish near Motomachi-Chukagai or Ishikawacho rather than retracing the whole route. This is our suggested sequence; paid museums and rides are optional, not requirements for a worthwhile visit.
JNTO: Yokohama waterfront districts and city accessTokyo to Yokohama: choose the final station first
From Tokyo Station or Shinagawa, JR trains provide access to Yokohama Station. From Shibuya, the Tokyu Toyoko Line is another useful approach, alongside JR options. Yokohama is a straightforward rail excursion, but the time to Yokohama Station is not the time to a harbour attraction: allow for onward travel and the walk from the exit. For a Minato Mirai start, route to Minatomirai on the Minatomirai Line or Sakuragicho on JR or the municipal subway. For Chinatown first, route to Motomachi-Chukagai on the Minatomirai Line or Ishikawacho on JR. Yokohama Station is a major interchange, not the name of every central sightseeing stop. Shin-Yokohama is the shinkansen station and requires a separate onward city journey.

| Compare | Choose it for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sakuragicho / Minato Mirai | The main waterfront walk and a harbour-focused stay | Chinatown is a later section, not outside every hotel door |
| Chinatown / Yamashita Park | A food-led visit, park walk and the older port area | You may want local rail to the Minato Mirai end |
| Yokohama Station | A rail-focused hotel or onward connections | You still travel to the central harbour districts |
| Shin-Yokohama | A practical night around a shinkansen journey | It is a different district from the harbour route |
Morning or early afternoon: Minato Mirai and Shinko
Begin around Sakuragicho and the Minato Mirai waterfront, then continue towards Shinko and the Red Brick Warehouse area. The former warehouse complex now contains shops, cafes, restaurants and event spaces. Use it as a natural meal or indoor break rather than treating every shop as an attraction to complete. Choose one paid stop if it matters to you. The CUPNOODLES MUSEUM is in the waterfront sightseeing area; the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum is a different attraction near the shinkansen district. A booking for one is not a booking for the other. Leave time between a workshop and dinner instead of adding a second museum across the city.

Continue from the Red Brick Warehouse area towards the older port waterfront and Yamashita Park, then turn inland for Chinatown. If the full walk is becoming too much, use the Minatomirai Line to shorten the transfer and keep just the park-and-dinner section. This plan does not depend on a cruise departure or cable-car ride. Chinatown is an area with many restaurants, not a single food hall with one opening time. Choose between a seated meal and smaller purchases rather than expecting every shop to have the same menu or hours. For the journey home, the official city guide lists Motomachi-Chukagai and JR Ishikawacho as the nearby rail stations.
Yokohama Official Visitors Guide: Chinatown and its closest stationsWhat needs a ticket, and what does not?
The route can centre on outdoor waterfront walking and Chinatown, with food and rail travel as the main spending choices. Budget separately for museum entry, workshops, observation decks or rides you add. An attraction ticket is not needed simply to follow the public waterfront route, though events or individual facilities can have their own access controls. The CUPNOODLES MUSEUM lists adult admission at ¥500, with high-school-age children and younger admitted free. Normal museum hours are 10:00–18:00, last admission 17:00; regular closures are Tuesdays, the following day when Tuesday is a national holiday, and the year-end/New Year period. Check its dated calendar for your visit rather than inferring a particular day’s opening from a generic calendar banner. These published rules were checked on 24 October 2026.
CUPNOODLES MUSEUM YOKOHAMA: admission, hours and closure rulesMuseum entry does not guarantee a workshop place
The museum’s FAQ says general admission does not require a reservation, while its activities have separate participation arrangements. Allow for both the museum admission and any activity fee. If making noodles or designing a cup is the reason for the trip, settle that specific activity before fixing the day around it; buying admission alone does not establish a workshop place. The museum’s English FAQ and My CUPNOODLES Factory page use different reservation and numbered-ticket wording. Follow the current ticket purchase flow for the named activity and date rather than assuming either guaranteed walk-in participation or one universal advance-booking rule. If the activity is unavailable, keep the waterfront day or choose the museum exhibits instead.

The Minatomirai Line accepts interoperable IC cards such as PASMO and Suica. Its one-day ticket is listed at ¥460 for adults and ¥230 for children and is sold at station ticket machines. That ticket covers the Minatomirai Line, not the whole journey from Tokyo or every railway and bus in Yokohama. For a mostly one-way walking route, compare individual rides with the pass before buying it. A train continuing between railway companies does not mean their fares or pass coverage become identical. Keep the trip from Tokyo, any local line travel and paid attractions as separate budget decisions.
Minatomirai Line: IC cards and one-day ticket coverageShould you stay overnight in Yokohama?
Stay in Minato Mirai or near Sakuragicho if the purpose is the harbour evening followed by a slow waterfront morning. Choose the Chinatown/Yamashita area if dinner and that side of the port are the focus. A hotel near Yokohama Station is more useful for rail connections than for stepping straight onto this route. Shin-Yokohama suits a shinkansen-led overnight, not a substitute harbour location. For a Tokyo-based trip with just one Yokohama day, keep the Tokyo room. If you do move, check luggage storage with the actual property and plan the transfer before sightseeing. These are area choices, not hotel recommendations, availability claims or promises of a particular view.
JNTO: Yokohama districts and the distinction from Shin-YokohamaShort visits, rain and a second day
With only an afternoon, choose Minato Mirai and the Red Brick Warehouse area, then either Chinatown dinner or an evening return along the harbour. Do not force a museum workshop and the complete waterfront walk into that shortened visit. In heavy rain or summer heat, connect fewer districts and give an indoor stop more time. With a second day, choose one main interest: more time in Yokohama’s museums and neighbourhoods, or a separate Kamakura day for temples and coast. Do not label a Kamakura visit as another Yokohama waterfront stop. For a first trip with three full Tokyo days, this excursion replaces a city day unless you add time to the trip.
