Which Tokyo to Kawaguchiko route should you choose?
Take the direct Fuji Excursion train from Shinjuku if you can reserve a suitable departure and want to avoid highway traffic. Choose the highway bus from Shinjuku for a lower-cost direct journey: the operator lists ¥2,200 one way and about 1 hour 45 minutes to Kawaguchiko Station. The train takes about two hours in JR East’s published main-services timetable. Those are station-to-station or terminal-to-station times, not hotel-to-lake times.
If the direct train is full, the rail fallback is a Kaiji or Azusa service stopping at Otsuki, followed by a Fujikyu local train. Staying in Shibuya gives you another direct bus option, but its advertised journey is longer. For a day trip, choose both outward and return travel before fitting sightseeing around them.

| Your decision | Best reason to choose it | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Fuji Excursion from Shinjuku | Through train to Kawaguchiko, about two hours | Reserve the correct train and through-service carriage; seats can sell out |
| Shinjuku highway bus | ¥2,200 adult one way; advertised about 1 hour 45 minutes | Road delays can erase the apparent time advantage |
| Shibuya highway bus | Avoid a transfer across Tokyo if your hotel is in Shibuya | ¥2,300 adult one way; advertised about 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Kaiji or Azusa plus Fujikyu local | Useful when the through train has no suitable seats | Change railway companies at Otsuki and allow for ticket queues |
Fuji Excursion: board the through service at Shinjuku
JR East’s timetable valid from 14 March 2026 lists morning Fuji Excursion departures from Shinjuku, including 07:30 arriving at Kawaguchiko at 09:28. That is an example from the published timetable, not a live seat offer. Use the railway’s reservation search for your actual date and reserve a limited express seat before travelling. JR East’s visitor guidance describes this as an all-reserved-seat service.
Board at JR Shinjuku Station, not the expressway bus terminal. Read the carriage and seat on your ticket: the Fuji Excursion portion uses the Kawaguchiko-bound cars of a service that can be coupled to another limited express on the JR section. JR East’s transfer guide illustrates Fuji Excursion cars 1–3 and Kaiji or Azusa cars 4–12. A seat on the coupled JR train does not establish that your carriage continues to Kawaguchiko.
JR East: main train timetable valid from 14 March 2026If Fuji Excursion is full: change at Otsuki
Book a Kaiji or Azusa train that calls at Otsuki, then change there to the private Fujikyu Railway for Kawaguchiko. JR East gives about two and a half hours for this alternative. The Fujikyu local train does not require a seat reservation, but the JR limited express leg needs the appropriate limited express ticket. Do not treat every train using the Fujikyu tracks as a local: named express and sightseeing services have different ticket conditions.
At Otsuki, follow the Fujikyu Railway signs and allow time for the company change, ticket purchase and luggage. If your existing fare ticket ends at JR Otsuki, buy the onward Fujikyu fare. JR East warns that the ticket counters can be crowded. A connection that looks possible with an empty platform may not work if you still need to queue for the next ticket.

For the Shinjuku route, use Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal, also called Busta Shinjuku. Departures are on the fourth floor. The operator’s directions recommend the New South Gate of JR Shinjuku Station; take the escalator towards the departure level and find your gate on the terminal display. Do not wait at a street-side stop near a different Shinjuku exit.
The Shibuya alternative departs from Shibuya Expressway Bus Terminal at Shibuya Mark City, fifth floor. Select Kawaguchiko Station as the destination. Fuji-Q Highland, the expressway stop near Shimoyoshida and Mount Fuji’s fifth station are different stops or journeys; a ticket mentioning the Fuji area is not enough to identify the lake arrival.

Checked on 24 October 2026, the route page lists adult one-way fares of ¥2,200 from Shinjuku and ¥2,300 from Shibuya to Kawaguchiko Station. One adult returning by the Shinjuku route therefore pays ¥4,400 at the displayed fares; two adults pay ¥8,800 for the return journeys. These totals exclude local lake transport and every sightseeing stop. The advertised bus durations are estimates, not protection against traffic delays.
The reservation FAQ says bookings open one month before departure. A normal online reservation needs payment to complete it; arriving at the terminal without a booking only works if seats remain. Reserve the return too, especially for a short day trip. Avoid a tight flight or long-distance rail connection immediately after a highway-bus return to Tokyo.
Highway-buses.jp: booking window, payment and walk-up seat limitationsJapan Rail Pass versus JR TOKYO Wide Pass
The national Japan Rail Pass does not cover the Fujikyu Line between Otsuki and Kawaguchiko. Budget the uncovered Fujikyu fare and any applicable express charge separately, even if the JR part of the journey is covered. A through train does not make the whole trip a JR-only route.
The JR TOKYO Wide Pass is a different product. JR East lists Fujikyu Railway Lines within its coverage and currently prices the adult pass at ¥16,000 for three consecutive days. Extra charges apply to specified Fujikyu sightseeing or reserved-seat products. Compare the exact trains and your other journeys rather than buying it merely to avoid one ticket purchase. Neither rail pass is the ticket for the Shinjuku highway bus.

The highway-bus FAQ says suitcases can normally go in the luggage compartment, but storage rules vary by operating company. Bulky equipment such as bicycles, skis or instruments may be refused depending on capacity. It is not an unlimited baggage allowance. Keep the booking and the items you need during the journey with you.
Kawaguchiko Station is the arrival point, not the north-shore viewpoint. If your plan is Oishi Park or a north-shore hotel, add the local bus, taxi or an explicitly confirmed property transfer. A rail arrival may avoid highway congestion, but it does not remove this local leg. On a day trip, leave time to get back to the station before the return you reserved.
