Tokyo to Kyoto by train: stations, tickets and luggage

Choose Tokyo or Shinagawa, reserve the right seat and baggage space, and allow for Kyoto’s final hotel connection.

The direct rail route is the Tokaido Shinkansen

For a central Tokyo to central Kyoto journey, start with a direct Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto Station. JR Central describes Tokyo–Kyoto as about 130 minutes; treat that as an indicative fast train ride, not the time from your hotel door to the next one. Check the actual train and timetable for your date.

Choose the boarding station from your hotel route

Compare Tokyo and Shinagawa as boarding points, then book the one your selected train actually serves. Use the complete hotel-to-platform journey: local train, station exit or transfer gate, lifts if needed and walking with luggage. Do not book a train from Tokyo Station and assume the ticket instructions for a different boarding point are identical.

Which train should you choose?

Compare Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama for the actual departure you want. The quickest advertised Tokyo–Kyoto journey is a fast-service benchmark, not a journey time for every stopping pattern. If you use a national JR Pass, eligible Hikari and Kodama services are the baseline; Nozomi needs the additional pass-holder ticket.

With individual tickets, choose the service and seat before comparing prices. A cheaper departure that disrupts checkout or creates an awkward Kyoto arrival may not be the useful option.

  1. 1 · Before checkout

Confirm the ticket and measure luggage

Check the boarding station, date, service, seat and method of boarding. If you have oversized luggage, reserve the appropriate baggage seat before leaving the hotel.

  2. 2 · Local journey

    Reach Tokyo or Shinagawa

Plan the hotel-to-station leg separately and leave margin for a large unfamiliar station. Follow Tokaido Shinkansen signs, not only generic JR signs.

  3. 3 · Intercity ride

Take the booked train to Kyoto Station

Match the departure display, train number, car and seat to your reservation. Your destination for the direct journey is Kyoto, not Shin-Osaka.

Continue from Kyoto Station to the hotel

Save the hotel address and chosen local connection. Kyoto Station is not the same place as the eastern sightseeing districts. Confirm hotel luggage storage if arriving before check-in.

A ticket, a pass and an IC card are not interchangeable

The smartEX basic service combines the Shinkansen basic fare and limited-express ticket; conventional local trains before or after it are charged separately. Follow the boarding instructions for your actual booking, whether it uses a QR ticket, linked IC card or collected ticket. Topping up a city transport card alone is not a Shinkansen reservation.

Using a JR Pass changes the train choice

The national JR Pass covers eligible services such as Hikari and Kodama within its rules. Nozomi is not included without an additional pass-holder NOZOMI MIZUHO ticket purchased before boarding. Compare the actual departure and arrival times of the trains you can use. Do not describe every Shinkansen service as included in the pass.

JAPAN RAIL PASS: train coverage and reservations

Oversized luggage: reserve the space, not just a seat

For ordinary suitcases over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in combined length, width and height, reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. The reservation has no additional charge over the corresponding reserved seat. A bag over 250 cm in total dimensions cannot be brought aboard under the operator’s stated rules. Baggage spaces behind designated seats are not communal storage for unreserved bags.

Smaller bags and pushchairs need different checks

Bags up to 160 cm in total dimensions can use the operator’s permitted smaller-bag storage areas. Strollers, sporting equipment and instruments have exceptions to the ordinary oversized-baggage rule, but reserving the designated oversized space is still necessary if you want to use that space. Check the official diagrams and rules for your item rather than relying on an airline’s suitcase label.

Budget for four pieces of the journey

Compare the Tokyo local transfer, the Shinkansen fare for your date and seat, the Kyoto local transfer, and any luggage forwarding you choose. smartEX reserved-seat fares vary by season and train category. Its basic service is not a promise that advance-discount products have the same change or refund conditions. Check the exact product before paying.

Plan what happens after Kyoto Station

A station-area hotel is the simplest luggage drop-off after the train. Shijo-Karasuma, Shijo-Kawaramachi and Gion give different evening and sightseeing access, but require another local leg. Our Kyoto guide compares these bases and separates the eastern, western and southern sightseeing days.
